I spent my teen years in French Morocco, Casablanca. We were refugees
from Budapest Hungary. On November 8, 1942 the American army occupied
Casablanca and Morocco. It was one of my happiest days.
With the arrival of the U.S. Troops we got exposed to American radio,
movies and magazines. I realized later how much the movies influenced
our lives.
My very best friend Jacqueline and I saw our first Deanna Durbin movie
in 1943 and we became her greatest fans. We begged our parents until
they gave in and allowed us to take singing lessons and private
English classes. We just adored her and wanted to be just like her. In
our minds, life was a musical and for no reason we would start singing.
I don’t think that my parents were too happy. Most of my singing was
done coming down the stairs putting on movie star poses and faces. I
remember once I missed a step and really hurt myself .
Our hairdo was the same and we had the seamstress copy her clothes.
My poor mother was going crazy.
My high school friend lives now in the southern part of France. We are
still in touch, and I have visited her many times. A few years ago they
came out with six DVDs of Deanna Durbin‘s best movies. I sent it right
away to Jacqueline, and we realized that we are still her biggest fans.
We found out that after leaving Hollywood she married a French man, had
children, became very fat and is still living somewhere in anonymity in
France. Deanna still has a fan club in England.
Every so often I put her DVD on and remember her and enjoy her
beautiful voice. I wish I could let her know how much she added to our
lives and how happy she made us. I know that Jacqueline and I will
always remember and love her.
